Hall Gate Chowk Redesign – Amritsar

Where heritage meets modern vibrancy

Hall Gate Chowk Redesign – Amritsar

Honoring Shaheed Udham Singh with timeless design

The Hall Gate Chowk Redesign in Amritsar, crafted by Sachin Arora Architects, transforms a historic traffic circle into a vibrant urban landmark, featuring the prominent statue of Shaheed Udham Singh at its center. Installed in 1990 to commemorate the revolutionary's martyrdom, the statue stands as a symbol of courage and sacrifice, surrounded by a circular landscaped garden with lush greenery, palm trees, and geodesic domes for a modern touch. The design includes red brick arches inspired by traditional Punjabi architecture, welcome signage, and pathways that enhance pedestrian flow while preserving the site's cultural significance near Hall Bazaar and the walled city.

This project under the Government’s Public-Private Improvement Scheme integrates sustainable elements like native plants and efficient lighting, creating a welcoming space for community gatherings and tourism. The symmetrical layout with vertical elements and night-time illumination highlights the arches and textures, ensuring safety and aesthetic appeal. By honoring Udham Singh's legacy—known for avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre this redesign not only revitalizes a busy intersection but also fosters a sense of pride and historical connection for Amritsar's residents and visitors.
